After the recent train derailment in Odisha, we analyse whether there has been an adequate focus on rail safety on the Indian Railways, based on a recent Comptroller Auditor General (CAG) report.

Policy Watch: Train derailments and rail safety in India
On 2 June, Odisha saw a devastating train crash. In the city of Balasore, two passenger trains and a stationary goods train collided because a signal malfunction gave one of the passenger trains the green light to continue at maximum speed, an issue seen earlier in the year in Mysore. It left 288 dead and over 800 injured.
